“a very old man with enormous wings”

by Gabriel García Márquez

csm pdp year 1 project

note:

Marquez humanizes the old man by highlighting his physical frailty despite his enormous wings, which become a burden rather than a symbol of strength. He focuses on the ordinary aspects of the old man's life—his need for food and rest—creating a relatable essence. Through the old man's experiences of confusion, fear, and longing, Marquez taps into universal emotions, inviting readers to empathize with his struggles. This portrayal blurs the boundary between the fantastical and the deeply human, fostering a connection between readers and this mysterious character. Marquez never clarifies if the old man is genuinely human, nor does the story conclude with his mysterious identity unveiled.

"His only supernatural virtue seemed to be patience..." shows that, though his identity is a mystery, he is actually profoundly more humane than any humans in the story.
